Hey, guys! I am super excited to talk about a poetry collection I really enjoyed, The Princess Saves Herself In This One by Amanda Lovelace. I just want to preface this by saying that this is not easy to read poetry. It is deeply personal and deals with a lot of dark topics. If you can’t really handle things like that, I don’t recommend reading this book. I go into the dark topics in my review to serve as a trigger warning, so feel free to continue reading this review!
“Ah, life- the thing that happens to us while we’re off somewhere else blowing on dandelions & wishing ourselves into the pages of our favorite fairy tales.”
A poetry collection divided into four different parts: the princess, the damsel, the queen, & you. the princess, the damsel, & the queen piece together the life of the author in three stages, while you serves as a note to the reader & all of humankind. Explores life & all of its love, loss, grief, healing, empowerment, & inspirations.”
I really enjoyed this! Is it the absolute best-written poetry in the entire world? No, but I think one should actually analyze all of the messages in the poetry in this collection, which is what I did. It was so hard to read, honestly, just because you can feel all of the pain that Amanda felt throughout the hardest parts of her life. I won’t really talk about any specific events, but there definitely should be a trigger warning for physical abuse, anorexia, and emotional abuse.
This poetry deals with so many hard topics like eating disorders, grief, physical, emotional and sexual abuse among others. The raw intensity of these poems just really hit me, and it made me feel like I was so much inside her head, but this poetry collection also was really about empowering women, and it was about her learning to love herself. She had to recognize that she couldn’t rely on someone else to save her; she had to save herself.
In this collection, Amanda also speaks directly to the readers, speaking of how important it is to love yourself and know you are never alone in your struggles. That particular section was very inspiring to read about, and I definitely recommend you check out that section of the poetry. It is the final section, titled “You.”
I just really loved this entire poetry collection, and I can’t wait to read more from Amanda Lovelace!
